Italic Text Generator

Unicode never assigned an italic lowercase h. When the mathematical italic block was written, the slot that h would have taken was already occupied by the Planck constant symbol, ℎ, so that is what every italic generator on the web substitutes — including this one. It looks nearly identical at normal reading size. If you set the preview slider to its largest setting you can just about see that the h sits slightly differently from its neighbours.

Italic carries a softer weight than bold, which makes it useful where bold would be too loud: a quote inside a caption, a book or song title, an aside in a longer post, a tagline under a name. It is also the friendlier option for a full line of text, because a whole line of bold reads as shouting while a whole line of italic just reads as styled.

Plain italic is the lightest. Bold italic adds weight while keeping the slant. Sans italic drops the serifs and looks closest to a normal app font set on a lean. Sans bold italic is the heaviest of the four. On a small phone screen the differences between them compress a lot, so preview at the size you will actually be read at rather than at the default.
